The Pura Raza Española (PRE for short) is one of the best known Iberian breeds from Spain. In North America, the PRE's closely related lusitano is often grouped within the PRE breed, though the lusitano has its own registry, bloodlines and history and is slightly different in conformation.

Historically, only a rare number of colours was allowed in the breed, but recently the regulations were altered with the rare colours becoming more and more popular. The base colours and grey are the most common, with cream a good second. The old and rare pearl allele has only recently been discovered but has since become very popular, with carriers becoming quite expensive.
